Nowhere to run. Finding its way across multiple albums and EPs, this statement serves as a golden thread to unlocking links between the discography of Code Orange from Pittsburgh. Yet, it also represents a mindset of self-confrontation the band has pushed to the forefront. Where some artists may deliberately repeat successful records, Code Orange is a band dedicated to change and innovation despite what their fanbase might think. We caught up with singer Jami Morgan back in June to discuss the writing process of the upcoming record The Above, how the LP fits into the project's continuous narrative, as well as tackling growth and success as a band in different continents by going all in.

While Underneath is undoubtedly the band's best attempt of what Morgan calls metallic hardcore "techno hell", it was also the record that went through the weirdest life cycle: As if Friday the 13th weren't already an ominous release date, all foreseeable presentations were swept under the rug last minute by Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns, making it impossible to showcase the album's intensity in person. Yet, even when faced with such adversity, Code Orange swiftly revamped their live set into a vastly different experience: By co-pioneering remote, digitally streamed concerts and setting the benchmark of what many others would soon copy to bridge the gap during the pandemic. In fact, this concept was carried throughout Underneath's life span, with guitar playthroughs and Q&As, immersive concerts as well as a brilliant MTV style unplugged show that aired in the summer of 2020.

But what comes next after such a long period of necessary experimentation? How would the sextet open the door to new ideas?

After teasing the fans with an oddly left-field remix album titled What Is Really Underneath?, many were left disappointed by the seemingly new direction the group had taken. Without any announcement of a new record in sight, the fear of a band succumbing to a completely electronic style still managed to put Code Orange in the crosshairs of social media discussions. Only when a mysterious phone number was posted did it become clear a new record had been waiting on the horizon.

All this can be viewed as a smokescreen that is in line with the horror aesthetic which has become an integral part of the band's self-presentation. Misleading and disturbing alike, a video titled Code Orange SLAMS Modern Music Critics gave listeners a first taste of what's to come on this record.

The Above is equally haunting as it is eery, putting more emphasis on the band's emotive qualities and mellow songwriting. However, this is by no means an easy listening experience. Whether it's intricate melodies (Mirror) or crushing breakdowns you are looking for (Grooming My Replacement), do not expect to come out of this record unscathed.

Check out the interview with Jami Morgan below to get the full scoop on The Above, the band's vision and meaning behind LP number five!

The Above will be released via Blue Grape Music on September 29th, 2023.
