Darkpop truly is a thing of its own. It can be an easy pitfall for artists to implement pop elements into ones rock sound, only to be faced with elitist rejections based on genre. For Yonaka from Brighton, UK, a diverse approach to both records and presentation at live shows has given them the superpower of playing with almost any project while creating a dedicated fanbase the band lovingly refer to as 'Creatures'.
Initially formed in 2014, the group truly made waves as a tour support for Bring Me The Horizon and Fever 333 in 2016. The versatile nature of Yonaka's genre crossover has opened the door to many stylistically different songs. Take Predator for example, a stomping song with badass energy and pumping electronic breaks, punk rager Hands off my money, or the gut-wrenching Guilty (For your love). The trio, who perform live as a quartet, keep taking creative risks that resonate well with younger audiences and touch upon subjects such as mental health, self-affirmation and empowerment.
We caught up with singer Theresa Jarvis in Cologne ahead of her headline show with Yonaka at Luxor to chat about the most recent record Welcome to my house and one-off single, Predator. You can find the full podcast episode below:
